Dr. Dana Cea has been involved in the mental health field from all angles; as a counselor, educator, researcher, and consumer. In this episode, we discuss the role of stigma facing counselors with mental illness, barriers to care, and how peer support specialists can bridge the gap in suicide prevention and intervention.

Dana Cea (she/they), PhD, MS, CPSS, CRC, LCMHC, NCC has a masters in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from UNC Chapel Hill, and a doctorate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration from East Carolina University. They have served as a member of multiple divisions of the American Counseling Association including Association for Counselor Education and Supervision; American Rehabilitation Counseling Association; Counselors for Social Justice; Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities. They are currently a member of Pitt County, NC; Board of Directors for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). Dr Cea has been a Certified Peer Support Specialist since 2015 and has volunteered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention since 2012 and NAMI since 2016. They expressed symptoms of anxiety at age 4 and were later diagnosed with SPMI, which has deeply informed their clinical practice and advocacy work. They currently own Panacea Mental Wellness, a private practice in Pitt County and teach in the Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies at East Carolina University.
