Dr. Dana Cea has been involved in the mental health field from all angles; as a counselor, educator, researcher, and consumer. In this episode, we discuss the role of stigma facing counselors with mental illness, barriers to care, and how peer support specialists can bridge the gap in suicide prevention and intervention.

Meet Our Guest
Dana Cea (she/they), PhD, MS, CPSS, CRC, LCMHC, NCC has a masters in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from UNC Chapel Hill, and a doctorate in Rehabilitation Counseling and Administration from East Carolina University. They have served as a member of multiple divisions of the American Counseling Association including Association for Counselor Education and Supervision; American Rehabilitation Counseling Association; Counselors for Social Justice; Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities. They are currently a member of Pitt County, NC; Board of Directors for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI). Dr Cea has been a Certified Peer Support Specialist since 2015 and has volunteered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention since 2012 and NAMI since 2016. They expressed symptoms of anxiety at age 4 and were later diagnosed with SPMI, which has deeply informed their clinical practice and advocacy work. They currently own Panacea Mental Wellness, a private practice in Pitt County and teach in the Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies at East Carolina University.

In today's episode, we are going to be talking with counselor and fitness professional, Brit Guerin about the ways weight stigma impacts people of size in medical, mental health, and social contexts. We will be exploring weight from a Health At Every Size perspective, and will discuss ways that mental health professionals can more intentional in addressing the needs of folks in big bodies.

Meet Our Guest
Brit Guerin, LCMHCA, MS, MEd has a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Kinesiology, as well as a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. She is a certified ACSM Exercise Physiologist and a trainer for the Size Inclusive Fitness Training Academy. She co-owns Current Wellness, a wellness center in downtown Raleigh with a mission to activate inclusive wellness for mind, body, and community. As a licensed therapist (LCMHCA), Brit specializes in working with folks who are experiencing anxiety, disordered eating, disordered exercise, and trauma-related symptoms. She uses a Health at Every Size® approach, a somatic lens, and the principles of intuitive eating to help clients create a healthy relationship with their body, food, and exercise. She is trained in Embodied Recovery for eating disorders, as well as EMDR for trauma-focused therapy.

Racism impacts various aspects of health and well-being for people of African descent in America. Keisha Bryan, LCSW, LCAS addresses the struggles many black professionals experience in their workplaces, and communities. We unpack the ways White supremacy has created a structure where microaggressions are frequent and can negatively impact the therapeutic relationship, and talk through Keisha's experience as a Black woman, mother, and clinician in a Eurocentric community.

Meet Our Guest
Keisha Bryan, LCSW, LCAS has worked in various healthcare settings with individuals that suffer from substance use disorders, and mental health issues. She has led groups, seminars, and retreats on a variety of topics including the impact of addictions on family members, divorce recovery, and depression. Keisha’s passion is working with Black men, women, that are battling the psychological impact of racism. Keisha offers individual and group therapy that provides safe spaces for her clients to process their racial trauma as well as heal from these traumas and various legacy burdens that have been negatively impacting the client’s mental health. Keisha practices through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Dimica Lawrence, MSW, LCSW is currently in private practice in North Carolina. She received her Master of Social Work-Advanced Standing Program from North Carolina State University in 2018 and has worked in community-based and private practice settings with Adolescents with Severe Emotional Disturbances, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual and Developmental Disorders, Juveniles, couples and families.
